Play Pretend

Back to Writings

The light fades and with it, the look on your face
I hold on to your taste but the dark drive home chews me up,
spits out a soft rejection- "come back again"
I need you now, can we play pretend?

Act like the scarlet sky won't come for us,
untouchable in our shining tower
This man of the hour could become man of the year
Voice whispers in my ear telling me sweet nothings
two gods dressed only in a window's golden glare

I can't bear to be sent away with scraps again but
moment's over and I'm just a stray in your room
Hiding just out of view, something that shouldn't be there,
waiting for that sinister sunset to strip our time away-
for your happy, harpy grip on my neck to fade-

I'm back here each and every week- same time, same channel
Daytime television reruns of your favorite show
we take it slow, like the sun will just keep shining
but the shadows are climbing and I pretend not to notice
Knowing I can't make it through another "come back again"
